Different Network Riser Types for Building Infrastructure

November 21, 2025

In building infrastructure, network risers are designed based on how cables are routed vertically and the type of building. The main types include:

  1. Vertical Riser
    • Runs straight up or down between floors.
    • Often used to connect network closets or communication rooms on each floor.
  2. Backbone Riser
    • Carries high-capacity cables like fiber optics or multiple Ethernet lines.
    • Acts as the central “backbone” of the building network.
  3. Telco/Service Riser
    • Specifically for telephone, internet, or service provider connections.
    • Separates external network feeds from internal building networks.
  4. Mixed-Use Riser
    • Combines different types of cables (data, voice, security, fire alarm) in a single riser shaft.
    • Ensures organized cable management and reduces clutter.
