How to Design a BAS Network Riser Diagram for Building Automation Systems

A BAS (Building Automation System) network riser diagram is a visual representation of how communication and control networks run vertically and horizontally throughout a building. It’s a critical tool for planning, installing, and maintaining building automation systems, including HVAC, lighting, security, and energy management.

Step 1: Understand the Building Layout and System Requirements

  • Obtain floor plans, room layouts, and utility shafts.
  • Identify all devices to be controlled, such as VAVs, AHUs, sensors, controllers, and actuators.
  • Determine the network type (BACnet, Modbus, KNX, or IP-based).

 

Step 2: Define the Main Network Backbone

  • Identify the main server, controllers, and core switches.
  • Decide on the vertical riser paths through which data cables will travel between floors.
  • Choose riser-rated cables to meet fire and safety codes (CMR for vertical shafts, CMP for plenum areas).

Step 3: Plan Floor-Level Distribution

  • Determine floor controllers, subnet switches, and device clusters.
  • Draw horizontal branches from the vertical riser to connect devices on each floor.
  • Include riser connect points, patch panels, and junction boxes for organized cabling.

Step 4: Include Redundancy and Scalability

  • Consider redundant paths for critical devices to ensure continuous operation.
  • Leave room for future expansion—extra conduits or spare ports at riser locations.

Step 5: Use Standardized Symbols and Labels

  • Use industry-standard symbols for switches, routers, controllers, sensors, and actuators.
  • Label each device, cable type, and connection clearly.
  • Include a legend to make the diagram easy to read and follow.

Step 6: Verify Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure riser paths comply with local fire codes, electrical standards, and building regulations.
  • Make sure cabling avoids interference with power lines or HVAC ducts.

Step 7: Create the Diagram

  • Use tools like AutoCAD, Visio, or specialized BAS design software.
  • Represent vertical risers as straight lines connecting floors, with horizontal branches to devices.
  • Show all network devices, controllers, switches, and cable routes clearly.

Step 8: Review and Update

  • Share the diagram with the installation team for feedback.
  • Update it after installation for accurate documentation.
