What Communication Protocols Are Used in BMS (like BACnet, Modbus, etc.)?

November 15, 2025

A BMS relies on communication protocols — the languages that let different devices talk to each other.

  • BACnet (Building Automation and Control Network):
The most common, open protocol for integrating devices from multiple vendors.
  •   Modbus:
A simple and widely used protocol for connecting industrial equipment and meters.
  • LonWorks:
Used for decentralized control in lighting and HVAC systems.
  •  KNX:
A European standard for lighting, shading, and HVAC control.
  •  MQTT / IP-Based Protocols:
Used for modern IoT-enabled BMS systems with cloud connectivity.

In short:
These protocols ensure smooth communication and interoperability, no matter how many systems or brands are involved.
